Have you ever seen those videos on YouTube or Instagram where celebrities go through their bag? I always wonder how realistic that is, because my purse looks nothing like that.
I also feel like the older I get, the bigger my purse gets. I used to carry a cute little purse - it had just the essentials: my phone, wallet, and maybe a lip gloss.
Then I had kids.
Somewhere along the way, my purse turned into a small survival kit that somehow contains snacks, receipts, random toys, and occasionally a rock someone insisted was important. Thankfully, I've always been extremely insistent on keeping my purse tidy, so hereâs a peek at what I actually carry â and the few things that keep it from becoming complete chaos.
The One Thing That Keeps My Purse From Becoming a Black Hole
Letâs start with the item that changed everything.
If youâve ever spent five minutes digging through your purse for your phone while your kid asks you the same question seven times, youâll understand why this matters.
A felt purse organizer is my lifesaver. It's basically a structured insert that sits inside your bag and creates compartments for everything. I love to get one for my daily bags (Here's one for a LV Neverfull, and my handy LePliage) the ones I use 80% of the time. They keep my purses clean and organized, and if something spills in them - the water-resistant felt keeps it from ruining the actual bag itself.
It helps keep things like:
- your wallet
- keys
- lip balm
- pens
- snacks
from floating around loose in the bottom of your purse.
The best part is that if you switch purses, as long as the sizes are relatively similar, you can just lift the organizer out and drop it into the new bag.
A Small Notebook and Pen (Because Kids Get Bored Everywhere)
If you have kids, you already know this moment:
Youâre waiting at a restaurant, doctorâs office, or school event⌠and suddenly everyone is bored.
Thatâs why I always keep a small notebook and pen combo in my purse.
Itâs amazing how long kids will entertain themselves with something simple like:
- drawing
- playing tic-tac-toe
- writing silly stories
- practicing letters
Itâs quiet, screen-free, and takes up almost no space. I love these from Feela because they're so cute, I even write my grocery lists in there just because!
Honestly, itâs saved me during many long waits.
A Makeup Pouch That Handles Quick Touch-Ups
Iâm not carrying a full makeup bag in my purse these days. But I do like having a few basics handy.
A small makeup pouch keeps everything contained so it doesnât roll around inside my bag.
Inside mine I usually keep:
- My MILK blush and lip balm (yay for multi-tasking makeup)
- several Goody hair ties (because my daughter will inevitably lose hers)
- travel-size hand lotion (right now this Caudalie one is my favorite)
- A press powder to get rid of the oily glow I inevitably get by mid-afternoon (I use NYX - so affordable and lasts FOREVER)
- And a mini Kabuki brush to blend out the balms and powders
The Random Mom Items That Somehow Always Appear
Even with the organizer, there are still a few things that mysteriously end up in my purse.
For example:
- fruit snack wrappers
- tiny toys
- crumpled receipts
- emergency snacks
- a sock that somehow came off in the minivan.
Mom purses have a way of collecting items we didnât intentionally pack.
At this point, Iâve accepted it, but I try to clean out my purses every Sunday night to prepare myself mentally for the week ahead.
The Goal Isnât a Perfect Purse
Some days my purse is organized. Some days it looks like a toddler rummaged through it looking for goldfish crackers.
And honestly, thatâs normal. Remember that you don't have to be the celebrity playing "What's in my purse." You are YOU, and thatâs already a win!
